Our Care

Designing a User Experience for Social Good

Project Overview

Our Care is a place where people without income can search for health care. Our Cares' primary target users include anyone who needs health care but does not have income or proper health care coverage.

Project Duration

3 Months

September to November

My Role

UX designer leading the app and responsive website design from conception to delivery. Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and design iteration.

The Problem

There is no centralized place where people can find federal, state, and local healthcare and resources.

The Goal

To design an app where users will have a centralized place to find healthcare and resources for themselves and family members.

EMPATHIZE

User Research Summary

I develop interview questions, which were then used to conduct user interviews. Most interview participants reported feeling frustrated when trying to find healthcare in a system that is so complicated. Participants across the board struggled with healthcare information not being in one central place and the varied documents and qualifications for different programs and needing to find care for more than one person. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users need access to an easy-to-use tool to help guide them to healthcare that is right for them and their unique financial and medical situations.

Meet Angie

Persona 1

Angie is a busy parent with 3 small children who needs to find information for healthcare for all family members in one place because she wants to find appropriate healthcare for all members of her family.

Meet Koren

Persona 2

Koren is a person searching for employment who needs to see the same health care provider at every visit  because they want to build a relationship with their providers to receive the best care for their medical needs.

Competitive Audit

An audit of a few competitors’ products provided direction on gaps and opportunities to address with the Our Care app.

Ideation

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on a centralized place to find all healthcare and information.

WIREFRAMING

Digital Wireframes

After ideating and drafting paper wireframes, I created the initial designs for the Our Care app. These designs focused on delivering guidance to users to help find care.

PROTOTYPE

Low fidelity prototype

To prepare for usability testing, I created a low-fidelity prototype that connected the user flow of a new person looking for healthcare.

Usability Study Findings

5 usability studies were complete. These were the main findings uncovered by the usability study.

01
Finding Care

Users wanted a clear indication of where to start finding care

02
Guided Assistance

Users wanted more prompts and guides to find care

03
Screener Questions

Users wanted to feel that they were able to share the right information to lead them to the correct care

Mockups

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a clear section from the home screen to look for care.

Additional design changes included adding a screener question pages to provide users with a more guided tool to help with finding more accurate care for their needs.

Key Mockups

Accessibility Considerations

There are 2 accessibility considerations that were included in the design of the app.

Clear Labels

Clear labels for interactive elements that can be read by screen readers.

Personalized

Initial focus of the home screen on personalized recommendations to help define the primary task or action for the user.

Sitemap

With the app designs completed, I started work on designing the responsive website. I used the Our Care sitemap to guide the organizational structure of each screen’s design to ensure a cohesive and consistent experience across devices.

Design

The designs for screen size variation included mobile, tablet, and desktop. I optimized the designs to fit the specific user needs of each device and screen size.

TAKEAWAYS

No matter how long you have been designing, there are always things you learn for every project. Here are a few of my takeaways.

Impact

Users shared that the app was easy to use and made finding healthcare seem easier with all of the information in one place.

What I learned

I learned that even though the problem I was trying to solve is very large, diligently going through each step of the design process and aligning with specific user needs helped me design solutions that were both feasible and useful to users.

I also learned that when trying to solve problems for healthcare it seems to highlight the failures in the healthcare system that make solving for a smaller problem feel like only putting a bandaid on a major open wound.

Next Steps

01

Further Research

Conduct research on how successful the app is on the goal of having a centralized place to find healthcare.

02

Personal Health Records Feature

Add a personal health records feature because users wanted a way to have all care and information localized in once place.

03

Educational Resources

Add more educational resources for users to learn about health free of charge. Users were also highly interested in learning more about health conditions and management.
